Time to keep the kitchen utensils in the kitchen drawer!

The Myth: Poking holes in your potted plant's soil with a fork, skewer, or toothpick is a quick and easy way to aerate it.

The Truth: While it might feel like you are helping your plant breathe, this technique offers minimal aeration benefits because the tiny holes close right back up in compacted dirt. Even worse, you run a major hidden risk. You could easily pierce, slash, or shred your plant's delicate root system, opening the door to root rot and other bacterial infections.

Better ways to handle compacted soil:

Repot with a fresh mix:
If your soil is completely compacted and water just runs down the sides of the pot, it is time for a fresh, nutrient-rich soil mix with perlite or orchid bark.

Topdress with organic matter:
Adding a thin layer of worm castings or fresh compost on top can improve soil structure naturally.

Fix your watering routine:
Allow your soil to dry out appropriately between waterings and consider bottom-watering, which encourages healthy root growth while keeping the topsoil loose.

Save the forks for your dinner and protect those roots!
